Job Summary/Purpose:

The Paramedicine Program seeks a qualified individual to provide instruction in the first and second year curriculum leading to an AAS-Paramedicine degree. Part-time instructor’s direct student education and evaluate student performance in the classroom, lab, clinical and co-operative work experience sites.

• This is a part-time (< .50 FTE) non-benefited position, hired on a term-by-term basis. Hours of work may include evening or weekend teaching assignments.
• Part-Time Faculty compensation begins at Step 1 / $573 per load unit (LU). Load Unit is equivalent to class credit; and shall include both teaching and other assignments.
• Part-Time Faculty positions are not represented by the Faculty Forum Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• Initial assignment will be at the Bend Campus. May include travel throughout the College district.
• Official transcripts are required upon hire. Applicants anticipating Degree completion must supply a letter from his/her university stating the degree title and that the degree will be granted by that date.
• Upon hire, must pass criminal background check and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

Essential Functions:

Provide instruction in classes in the Paramedicine curriculum, including EMT; advanced-EMT; Oregon EMT-intermediate; paramedic courses including lecture, lab, internship and clinical; communication and documentation; patient transport; and other related classes as needed.

Provide one hour of office time per week per course to guide and evaluate student progress. Provide individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress and work in cooperation with the Paramedicine Program Director to coordinate lab, clinical and co-operative work experience for students.

Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day and/or evening and classes taught on or off campus.

Work with Program Director and other college personnel to update curriculum. Cooperate with faculty and accept direction from assigned Department Chair in developing and implementing syllabi, teaching methods, assignments, and standards to achieve course specific and program-wide student learned outcomes and assessment goals.

Cooperate with other College personnel including the Paramedicine Program Director to assist students with career planning, job placement, and follow-up studies.

Act as a resource person for students. This includes allowing sufficient time either before or after scheduled classes for individual student conferences OR holding regular office hours and assisting the Program Director with advising responsibilities.

Utilize resources, including technological resources such as Blackboard, to provide current course content and to record grades.

Conduct classroom presentations and activities; incorporate new methodologies in teaching and technology into classes.

Work with appropriate College personnel to write proposals for program funds.

Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to each location, by required deadlines relevant to part-time instructor teaching assignments, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Thorough knowledge in the field of paramedicine within the field of out-of-hospital emergency medicine.
2. Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.
3. Visual ability, corrected, to enable instructor to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.
4. Familiarity with and ability to operate or oversee the operation of audio-visual equipment, including overhead projectors, film, sound systems, video, television, interactive video and audio equipment including computer controlled mixed media presentations.
5. Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers and other written materials.
6. Ability to verbally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
7. Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services. Familiarity with and ability to remain in communication with the Paramedicine Program Director and program staff and faculty on a regular basis via college sponsored email system.
8. Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.
9. Ability to work with the Program Director, faculty, Natural and Industrial Resources Department Chair and other COCC staff at all levels.
10. Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required.
11. Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

The ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. Work is performed primarily indoors, in a classroom setting. The incumbent is expected to follow College work rules and policies. Requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Requires moderate physical movement including, lifting objects/materials as needed for classroom set-up, regular use of hands and arms to demonstrate skills/techniques, ability to bend to provide one on one guidance to students. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. AAS-Paramedicine degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher learning that includes course work equivalent to the uniform associate of applied science degree in Paramedicine as approved by the Oregon State Board of Education and offered by Oregon’s community colleges.
2. Three years of Paramedic pre-hospital emergency and non-emergency care experience.
3. Have completed NFPA Fire Instructor I or Fire Service Instructor I and II or a Division approved equivalent.

Special Necessary Qualifications:
• Current Oregon Paramedic License.
• Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider Instructor (professional CPR) or equivalent.

Special Qualifications:

• Teaching experience in a Community College setting preferred.
