Job Summary/Purpose:

To conduct and interpret sub-maximal fitness testing for HHP classes and maximal fitness testing of community members on both able-bodied and special needs individuals under the overall direction of the COCC Physiology Lab Director and HHP Department Chair. Oversees day-to-day operation of the lab.

Essential Functions:

Essential Job Functions

1. Conduct fitness testing in lab environment utilizing cardio fitness testing equipment, strength endurance testing, and similar.
2. Measure amount of body fat, using such equipment as hydrostatic scale, skinfold calipers, or tape measures.
3. Explain fitness testing procedures to participants. Monitor participants for symptoms or signs of physical distress providing and/or escalating emergency care, if required.
4. Interview participants to obtain medical history or assess participant goals adhering to HIPAA standards.
5. Interpret program participant data and results to evaluate fitness status or identify risk factors.
6. Identify and recommend improvements to fitness results in accordance with exercise science standards, regulatory requirements, and credentialing requirements.
Demonstrate correct use of exercise equipment or performance of exercise routines.
7. Promote informational seminars and lectures to student and community groups to increase public awareness of facility and health.
8. Maintain lab and equipment, such as calibration and troubleshooting of lab equipment including lactate analyzers, treadmill, compu-trainer, hydrostatic tank, heart rate monitors, blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, and metabolic cart.
9. Supervise maintenance of exercise or exercise testing equipment.
10. Mentor or train staff in proper protocols in fitness testing, the use of equipment, and calibration of lab equipment.
11. Assist in evaluating students in conducting diagnostic tests and lab use.
12. Perform general administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments, billing community members, maintaining participant records, or ordering supplies and equipment.
13. Perform other essential duties as assigned as it related to the position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Must be able to organize many lab schedules (including classes/students, community members, lab director, and your own) and overall lab procedures.
2. Must be able to inventory and order supplies, so that necessary lab materials are on hand when needed.
3. Must be able to handle adverse situations with students and community members such as students/community members no-show, make-up testing, dissatisfied students/community members, and accurately answering many questions or directing them to the Lab Director when necessary.
4. Must be able to work collaboratively with the Lab Director, HHP instructors, students, staff, faculty, equipment technicians, interns, and equipment company reps, and the general public.
5. Must be able to use the telephone, computer, printer, treadmill, metabolic cart, lactate analyzers, scale, skin fold calipers, underwater weighing equipment, fax machine, compu-trainer, Monarch bikes, blood pressure cuffs, stethoscope, dynamometer, various flexibility & strength measuring equipment, RPE chart, calibration gas canisters, and heart rate monitors.
6. Must be able to use the following software: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, E-mail) and be able to navigate the World Wide Web. Must be able to learn Turbofit software on the job.
7. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using the English language.
8. Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.
9. Must be able to demonstrate essential job functions as outlined above.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Extended standing and some lifting of under 10 pounds is required 50% of the time Health and safe exposures include:

1. Noise extremes – time exposed 4%
2. Ventilation extreme – time exposed less than 1%
3. Bad weather – time exposed less than 1%
4. Safety Hazards – time exposed 5%
5. Contamination exposure to disease or toxic substances – time exposed 20%

This position requires a person with a very flexible schedule as hours vary daily depending on needs of accommodating classes and community members into the lab. To meet these lab demands, it may require recurring late/early hours. Computer screen is used 70% of the time. Must be able to climb or pull self upward, kneel, stoop, crawl, crouch, balance, and guide, feeding materials into proper position. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions without a significant risk of injury or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.

Persons in this position are exposed to blood, other bodily fluids, or other potentially infectious materials and therefore are required to have a current hepatitis B vaccination. The employee has the right to waive the inoculations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required

1. Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Human Performance, or other closely related field.
2. One year experience directly working with the public in various arenas (i.e., personal training, coaching, teaching, customer service).
3. Experience working or internship in a lab setting.
4. Current CPR and first aid certification
