Job Summary/Purpose:

Position Summary: To provide instruction in the area of exercise oriented courses and set curriculum of Better Bones and Balance, including lecture and lab components. Continuing Education instructors are responsible for planning and instructing non-credit classes to the general population, ages 16 and older, throughout the Central Oregon Community College district. Non- credit classes vary widely in the number of hours and course sessions.

Terms of Employment:

• This position is limited duration to be filled on term-by-term need, is non-benefited, and non-exempt hourly.
• Candidate must be flexible with work hours to meet evening or weekend class schedules; able to drive throughout College district as needed.
• Successful completion of background check and vehicle reference check.

To meet that mission, COCC Continuing Education provides relevant lifelong learning opportunities by delivering exceptional educational experiences. Continuing Education provides an array of classes that allow students to explore personal interests and learn new skills.

Essential Functions:

• Instructor is responsible for teaching curriculum and providing instruction according to departmental and certification standards.
• Instructor is responsible for classroom management.
• Instructor is responsible for completing any required paperwork prior to or following completion of a course. This may include facilitating completion of required student consent/liability waivers, student evaluations, CEU documentation and/or curriculum completion documentation.
• Participate in appropriate professional development and training activities to remain current in knowledge and instructional methods.
• Maintain a high standard of professionalism and ethics with students, colleagues and the community.
• Instructor is expected to assist in marketing their classes, with approval from the Continuing Education Marketing Manager.
• Instructor is committed to providing information that is consistent with the stated scope of practice, requirements and the limitations of their profession. They shall provide only those services for which they are qualified via education and/or experience and by pertinent legal regulatory process.
• Instructor shall preserve the confidentiality of privileged information and shall not release such information.
• Instructor shall comply with applicable local, state and federal laws and with COCC policies and guidelines.
• Instructor shall not engage in any form of conduct that constitutes a conflict of interest.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
• Abide by all COCC policies and procedures.
• Ability to use computer applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook) and keyboard. Also able to use other basic technology including (phone, copier, fax, adding machine, etc).
• Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.
• Ability to accommodate students at various skill and mobility levels as it applies to fitness activities.
• Skill in time management and ability to teach and organize independently.
• Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of participants.
• Knowledge of and skill in fitness and exercise disciplines. Specifically, the Better Bones and Balance curriculum based out of Oregon State University.
• Visual ability to observe, direct, and supervise students during physical activity.
• Familiarity with and ability to safely operate fitness equipment.
• Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
• Willingness to travel and or teach at various hours and locations, as required.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Work performed primarily indoors, in a fitness space. Work may be performed outdoors, weather permitting. The incumbent is expected to follow College work rules and policies. The employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Physical movements involve guiding, feeding materials into proper position. Lifting objects vary daily, up to 50 pounds. Must be able to climb or pull self upward, kneel, stoop, crawl and crouch. Computer screen is used approximately 10 percent of the time. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Better Bones and Balance Instructor Certification (or willingness to obtain certification prior to hire)
2. Instructors are expected to have expertise in the exercise and fitness industry.
3. Current First Aid/CPR Certification, or the ability to obtain upon hire.

• Previous experience teaching group fitness classes.
• Bilingual candidates encouraged to apply.

This is a PT Instructor position for the Continuing Education Department at COCC. This position is part-time, non-benefited, and hired on a term-by-term basis.
