ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN ART APPRECIATION

The Texas Tech University J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts in collaboration with the School of Art is accepting applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in Art Appreciation. This position is for a nationally or internationally prominent researcher with a commitment to guide the art appreciation program to national distinction and nurture the next generation of students to becoming arts advocates and champions. The successful candidate will begin service in this full-time position at the beginning of the 2018 fall semester. Candidates who have very strong records of scholarship supported by extramural funding and who have the proven capacity or clear potential to bring externally sponsored research to Texas Tech University are encouraged to apply.
MA, MAE, MFA, or PhD. College/university level teaching experience. Experience in teaching historical and current topics in the visual arts, knowledge of best practices in the visual arts pertaining to the understanding of the field is preferred; as is experience teaching large lectures and using cutting edge instructional technologies such as blackboard, social media, Skype, hybrid courses and other software associated with online platforms for distance education and a demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serving diverse student populations. The successful candidate should provide strong evidence of the ability and desire to perform service duties, which include, but are not limited to, recruiting for the School, mentoring graduate students to teach and do research, building programs, as well as illustrating a strong commitment to extra-curricular activities to the department, college, and the university.
Ability to form partnerships within and outside of the university, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Two to three years of teaching experience in a four-year institution. A commitment to quality education; student centeredness; working as a team member. Experience mentoring and teaching diverse student populations and first-generation students is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will:
Teach the equivalent of five courses per academic year.
- Develop innovative and diverse forms of teaching art appreciation to non-art majors.
- Design and develop syllabi/course content collaboratively and individually for on-line, studio/based and thematic sections of the course.
- Successfully engage in research relevant to the field of Art Appreciation.
- Contact publishers to identify textbooks for face-to-face and online teaching/learning components.
- Assist the administration in identifying potential adjunct faculty to teach art appreciation.
- Mentor adjuncts and graduate students to teach classes.
- Serve on School and College wide committees as needed.
- Work closely with the associate director responsible for scheduling classes.
- Collaborate with members of the administration and faculty on ideas to enhance programs and student engagement.
- Demonstrate strong teaching ability and a record of successful creative endeavors and/or research activities.
- Work well with colleagues, act as a collaborative departmental citizen, and continue to engage in professional creative practice, exhibiting and/or scholarship.
The School of Art is NASAD accredited and offers the BA in Art History, BA in Art, the BFA in Studio Art, Graphic Design, and Visual Studies (teacher certification), the MAE, the MFA in Studio Art, MA in Art History, and the Ph.D. in Fine Arts with a major in Art termed “Critical Studies and Artistic Practice.” A faculty of 31 full-time professors serves approximately 250 undergraduate students and 60 students involved in graduate study. The School has many prominent alumni, including Caleb Bennett, John Hitchcock, Rob Wilson, Ken Little, Real Musgrave and Lana Rigsby. Technical and administrative support includes a total of 13 staff positions. The School’s Visual Resource Center maintains art reference books, current art periodicals, instructional media, digital classrooms, and a legacy slide collection, as well as an expanding collection of digital images for teaching and research.
