Job Summary/Purpose:

The position assists the College in achieving its mission to serve the College District by providing quality diversity related initiatives and programs, compelling co-curricular learning experiences and supportive environments that enable students and employees to meet the challenges of living and working in a diverse environment. This position provides primary leadership and support the College’s commitment to diversity, working collaboratively with students, faculty and staff to assist them in creating and promoting a welcoming, supportive and inclusive climate within the College community.

Essential Functions:

Provide leadership and direction for student diversity programs, including hiring, supervising, training and evaluating department staff for Native American and Latino college and high school programs; incorporate innovative student related recruitment, access and retention strategies to promote and increase student diversity; serve as an advocate for underrepresented populations; help in-district high schools support the College’s high school student college preparation program; and conduct regular assessment of program effectiveness.

Provide leadership to the College on creating a diverse and respectful learning and work environment through planning and delivering student and employee trainings, educational events and cultural events. Assess institutional policies and practices to support for equity and inclusion perspectives.

Provide leadership to and serve as a standing member of the campus Diversity Committee, coordinating the development and implementation of the College’s Diversity Plan and related activities, managing the student campus climate survey dissemination and interpretation, coordinating dissemination and education about the COCC Principles of Community, and facilitating the nomination and selection process of the campus Diversity Achievement Awards.

Collaborate with and support instructional departments to develop a broad understanding of diversity and inclusion topics and how those considerations can be integrated within the curriculum, teaching pedagogy and/or student learning styles. Coordinate co-curricular activities to support specific classes or academic departments.

Work with Human Resources to develop an understanding of diversity and inclusion best practices related to employee recruitment and retention efforts and in the delivery of the Culturally Respectful Hiring Practices workshop. In partnership with the Diversity Committee, work with Human Resources to update, distribute and interpret the employee campus climate survey.

Work with Grants Coordinator to research federal, state, corporate and private foundation grants which support department activities, write grant proposals, and provide overall administration of grant requirements.

Represent the College district to public and private, local, state, and regional organizations as related to diversity issues. Assess and report on institutional progress towards the State of Oregon cultural competency standards.

Develop and oversee related operating and grant budgets.

Serve on College committees as assigned and appropriate.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

1. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of diversity and inclusion best practices.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of recruiting, advising, mentoring and retaining students from underrepresented areas, first generation, multicultural and other diverse backgrounds.
3. Demonstrated knowledge in using current cultural competency principles.
4. Knowledge and experience with office management, supervision and managing budgets.
5. Knowledge of training and teaching modules.
6. Skill in public relations.
7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
8. Ability to effectively supervise the work of professional staff.
9. Ability to effectively plan educational and cultural events, working collaboratively to develop partnerships with members of the campus community and the College district to design and deliver these events.
10. Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.
11. Ability to be flexible, work various hours, and travel within the college district, as required.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Working hours are typically Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on some occasions, after regular work hours. Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms. Requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds. All individuals are required to be able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree in related field, and
2. Three years’ experience developing and managing inclusion and diversity programs and that includes trainings, and
3. Two years’ effective supervisory experience in a leadership role.
