Job Summary/Purpose:

Purpose: To provide instruction in Culinary, Beverage and Hospitality Management oriented courses, including lecture and lab components. Continuing Education instructors are responsible for planning and instructing non-credit classes to the general population, ages 16 and older, throughout the Central Oregon Community College district. Non-credit classes vary widely in the number of hours and course sessions.

Terms of Employment:

• This position is limited duration to be filled on course-by-course need, is non-benefited, and non-exempt hourly.
• Candidate must be flexible with work hours to meet evening or weekend class schedules; able to drive throughout College district as needed.
• Successful completion of background check is required; only information relevant to the position will be considered.
• Candidates must have current Oregon Driver’s License, or be able to provide transportation to and from their class; for positions requiring incumbent to drive College vehicles, a successful completion of a DMV reference check as necessary; only information relevant to the position will be considered.
• This position is posted as a “pool” position to collect applications for an anticipated opening. Your application will remain active in the system for future consideration if an instructor need becomes available.
• Culinary Arts instructors must be able to develop a course menu, budget and stay within budget when selecting ingredients and materials.

Continuing Education provides an array of classes that allow students to explore personal interests and learn new skills.

Essential Functions:

1. Instructors are responsible for course development, teaching and classroom management.
2. Instructors are expected to assist with marketing their classes, with approval for all marketing from the Continuing Education Marketing Manager.
3. Prepare and furnish students with an approved syllabus and or course outline.
4. Teach curriculum according to departmental standards.
5. Complete post-course paperwork.
6. Participate in appropriate professional development and training activities to remain current in knowledge and instructional methods.
7. Maintain a high standard of professionalism and ethics with students, colleagues and the community.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The incumbent is expected to follow College work rules and policies.

• Ability to meet timelines and complete tasks independently without direct oversight.
• Ability to prepare curriculum and necessary handouts for topic.
• Ability to use computer applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook) and keyboard. Also able to use other basic office equipment (multi-line phone, copier, fax, adding machine, etc).
• Skill in public speaking; Knowledge of instruction and teaching to various audiences and group dynamics.
• Skill in time management; ability to teach and organize independently.
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
• Knowledge of and skill in various culinary, beverage and hospitality disciplines.
• Visual ability to enable instructor to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.
• Familiarity with and ability to operate or oversee the operation of audio-visual equipment, including overhead projectors.
• Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers and other written materials.
• Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
• Ability to be flexible, work various hours, and travel within the college district, as required.
• Ability to communicate with students in a timely manner outside classroom hours.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Work is performed primarily indoors, in a classroom setting. The incumbent is expected to follow College work rules and policies. The employee is regularly required use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Physical movements involve guiding, feeding materials into proper position. Lifting objects vary daily, up to 50 pounds. Must be able to climb or pull self upward, kneel, stoop, crawl and crouch. Computer screen is used approximately 10 percent of the time. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

1. Professional training in the discipline in which you would provide instruction.
2. Current demonstrated experience in Culinary, Beverage, and Hospitality occupation.
3. Non-credit instructors are expected to have verifiable expertise in the area they wish to teach.

• ServSafe Certified and Oregon Food Handlers Permit
