Job Summary/Purpose:

To assist the lead instructor in providing culinary instruction to youth oriented courses, including lecture and lab components. Continuing Education assistant youth instructors are responsible for helping in facilitation of COCC youth culinary programs which are non-credit classes to the general population, ages under 16, throughout the Central Oregon Community College district. Non-credit classes vary widely in the number of hours and course sessions.

Terms of Employment:

• This is a part-time (<.50 FTE) Temporary Hourly, Non-Benefited
• Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district when needed.
• Upon hire, must pass criminal and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

Essential Functions:

1. Assistant instructors are responsible for assisting lead instructor with classroom management.
2. Perform constant supervision of youth in class.
3. Help facilitate course material.
4. Aid lead instructor in reasonable and needed job duties.
5. In charge of student sign in and out.
6. Participate in appropriate professional development and training activities to remain current in knowledge and instructional methods.
7. Maintain a high standard of professionalism and ethics with students, colleagues and the community.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Assistant instructors must be able to meet timelines and complete tasks without on-site management presence.
• Abide by all COCC policies and procedures.
• Ability to use computer applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook) and keyboard. Also able to use other basic office equipment (multi-line phone, copier, fax, adding machine, etc).
• Skill in public speaking; Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.
• Skill in time management and ability to teach and organize independently.
• Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community youth.
• Knowledge of and skill in various culinary, beverage and hospitality disciplines.
• Visual ability to enable instructor to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.
• Familiarity with and ability to operate or oversee the operation of audio-visual equipment, including overhead projectors.
• Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers and other written materials.
• Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
• Willingness to travel and or teach at various hours and locations, as required.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting under ten pounds for 15 percent of the time. Computer screen is used more than 70 percent of the time. Must be able to climb or pull self-upward and guide, feeding materials into proper position. Able to crawl under desks to check cabling and able to carry supplies between campus buildings. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Professional training in the discipline in which you would provide assistant instruction.
2. Verifiable references in the field of intended instruction.
3. Current demonstrated experience in Culinary, Beverage, and Hospitality occupation.

Special Qualifications:

• Previous teaching experience (classroom or professional/corporate training)
• ServSafe Certified and Oregon Food Handlers Permit
• Bilingual candidates encouraged to apply.
