Job Summary/Purpose:

Position Summary: To provide instruction in the area of Hobby and any special interest oriented courses, including lecture and lab components. Continuing Education instructors are responsible for planning and instructing non-credit classes to the general population, ages 16 and older, throughout the Central Oregon Community College district. Non-credit classes vary widely in the number of hours and course sessions. If you do not see a recruitment pool for your topic, apply here.


Terms of Employment:


• This position is limited duration to be filled on term-by-term need, is non-benefited, and non-exempt hourly.
• Candidate must be flexible with work hours to meet evening or weekend class schedules; able to drive throughout College district as needed.

To meet that mission, COCC Continuing Education provides relevant lifelong learning opportunities by delivering exceptional educational experiences. Continuing Education provides an array of classes that allow students to explore personal interests and learn new skills.


Essential Functions:

1. Instructors are responsible for course development, teaching and classroom management.
2. Assist with marketing their classes, with approval for all marketing from the Continuing Education Marketing Manager.
3. Prepare and furnish students with an approved syllabus and or course outline.
4. Teach curriculum according to departmental standards.
5. Complete post-course paperwork.
6. Participate in appropriate professional development and training activities to remain current in knowledge and instructional methods.
7. Maintain a high standard of professionalism and ethics with students, colleagues and the community.
8. Complete College training sessions as required by COCC.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
• Meet timelines and complete tasks without on-site management presence.
• Abide by all COCC policies and procedures.
• Ability to prepare curriculum and necessary handouts for topic.
• Ability to use computer applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook) and keyboard. Also able to use other basic office equipment (multi-line phone, copier, fax, adding machine, etc).
• Ability to use any special tools or equipment specific to class taught.
• Skill in public speaking. Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.
• Skill in time management and ability to teach and organize independently.
• Ability to plan and facilitate interactive classroom sessions targeted to an audience with varying levels of experience with the class subject.
• Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
• Knowledge of and skill in various home, garden and other discipline specific special interest topics.
• Visual ability to enable instructor to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.
• Ability to operate or oversee the operation of audio-visual equipment, including overhead projectors.
• Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers and other written materials, if needed.
• Effective oral communication, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
• Willingness to travel and or teach at various hours and locations, as required.
• Ability and willingness to communicate with students in a timely manner outside of classroom hours, as needed.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Work is performed primarily indoors, in a classroom setting. The incumbent is expected to follow College work rules and policies. The employee is regularly required use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Physical movements involve guiding, feeding materials into proper position. Lifting objects vary daily, up to 50 pounds. Must be able to climb or pull self upward, kneel, stoop, crawl and crouch. Computer screen is used approximately 10 percent of the time. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

1. Combination of education, professional training and life experience/background in the discipline or special interest area in which you would provide instruction.
2. References in the discipline of intended instruction.
3. Current demonstrated experience in the discipline in which you would provide instruction.

• Certifications in intended discipline if applicable.

This is a PT Instructor position for the Continuing Education Department at COCC. This position is part-time, non-benefited, and hired on a term-by-term basis.


Part-time instructor pools are posted for the term to obtain applications from those interested in teaching part-time as a non-benefited instructor, on a term-by-term basis, in the area of discipline advertised. Positions may not necessarily be available at the time you apply.
