VETERANS OUTREACH COORDINATOR
Reporting to the Director of Outreach and Transfer Services, the Outreach Coordinator will work to support the transition of ASU's military and Veteran student population to and from ASU. This position will assist in the development, routing, and deployment of articulation agreements with partner institutions, advising prospective Veteran students to maximize credit transfer and financial aid/benefit opportunities, and conduct campus-wide trainings on military student-specific challenges and opportunities. In addition, as an active member of the VETS team, this position will help establish and deploy outreach, career, and alumni support programs at ASU.
Serve as a liaison for Veterans, their families, and Veterans groups with ASU.
Assist in the development and routing of articulation agreements with select community colleges in Texas, and network with the Texas National Guard for completion of an articulation agreement regarding their associate's degree.
Work with supervisor on military student-specific articulation agreements and course transfer challenges and opportunities.
Gain knowledge of the transfer credit opportunities available for prospective Veteran students and communicate them effectively.
Host sessions and speak at meetings to educate the ASU community and service area about Veterans issues and opportunities for education.
Provide sound outreach by working with key constituents at ASU and in the San Angelo community to provide our prospective ASU Veterans a smooth transition to ASU.
Familiarize locally-based Veteran organizations with services that ASU offers to Veterans and their families.
Work with supervisor to develop a Veteran-specific online and in-person orientation for new Veteran students to ASU.
Work with supervisor to develop and deploy a one-stop concept in the VETS Center and on ASU's website.
Develop and deploy Veteran engagement programs for current student Veterans at ASU.
Work collaboratively with the Office of Career Development to provide job-related information and programming to student Veterans.
Work with supervisor to provide regular and detailed feedback to ASU administration on the progress and challenges in recruiting and retaining Veterans.
Identify resources inside and outside of ASU for needs of students and families for referral.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must develop and maintain a working knowledge of state, federal, institutional and other agency laws and regulations that govern VA benefits.
Must possess a working knowledge of VA benefits and financial
aid/student account policies and business procedures/practices. Maintain a reasonable understanding of selected policies, procedures and practices from offices that interact closely with the VETS Center and maintain confidentiality when appropriate as required by state law.
Must demonstrate creative thinking and planning abilities, and organizational abilities necessary to recruit and retain Veteran students.
Must have a substantial level of computer literacy and be familiar with database applications, such as Banner.
Must have extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, excellent analytical and problem solving skills, strong oral and written communication skills, effective interpersonal, leadership and consensus building skills, effective project planning and management skills, and the capacity to understand and be responsive to a diverse customer base.
Requires prolonged periods of sitting and standing; requires occasional walking, bending, and reaching; medium level manual dexterity needed; occasional lifting up to 30 lbs. Works in a pleasant, well-lighted, temperature-controlled environment; frequent periods of heavy workload.
Master's preferred and Bachelor's degree required with at least two years of successful and progressive program management experience working with Veterans or active duty service members.
Demonstrated experience in working with or serving in the military.
Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and comply with the university's vehicle use policy.
Master's degree preferred.
Military service preferred.
