Testing Technician (19.5 hours)
Under the supervision of, coordinates and administers a variety of standardized tests for the college, including English, mathematics, reading, ESL, career assessment, and academic tests and self-discovery batteries. Prepares preliminary assessments. Ensures integrity and control of testing and diagnostic materials.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Administers a variety of educational assessment tests aimed at identifying academic level, learning style, aptitude, and learning disabilities. Observes and documents student behavior and responses during the testing procedure.
- Administers a variety of tests on behalf of faculty for scheduled and on-line courses. Ensures proper testing environment and document control.
- Contacts new incoming students to discuss assessment options, schedules initial testing appointments, follows up to reschedule for missed scheduled appointments, and carries out the check-in of students into the assigned database. Works with students before testing to enhance success and minimize testing anxiety.
- Provides data to assist counselors, faculty and other specialists in assessing tests. Confers with specialists to determine specific testing needs of students. Schedules appointments and documents students needing further accommodations for testing and assessment.
- Score tests manually and by using a computer and specialized software. Updates student files and records. Monitor and maintain related student lists.
- Conducts preliminary assessments based on test results and observations of student behavior.
- Provides and explains test results to students and answers general questions about the assessment process.
- Assists with off-site proctoring of placement tests at local high schools and other designated locations.
- Compiles data related to assessment testing used for supporting research and state reporting, including numbers of students, demographics, number of tests given and types of tests.
- Maintains inventory of tests, testing supplies and general office supplies.
- Upholds Assessment Center policies and reports any perceived or observed signs of student conduct issues during testing such as cheating to the appropriate manager and/or administrator in accordance to campus Title IX guidelines for appropriate action.
- Assists in the training of student assistants and other part-time hourly staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
- Qualifications and Physical Demands
- State and District assessment and testing procedures, practices and protocols.
- FERPA, Title IX, and state and district laws/regulations governing community colleges
- Various assessment materials sufficient to assist students to understand intent and appropriately respond to test instruments.
- Office and lab organizational techniques, methods, and procedures.
- Computer-aided instruction and testing techniques and applications, microcomputer software installation procedures and uses.
- Use of spreadsheets and/or databases for storing and transferring data.
- Community college enrollment practices, including eligibility requirements for priority registration.
- Proper English language composition, syntax, grammar, usage, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation sufficient to compose specialized correspondence.
- Sufficient math skills to perform basic business computations, record statistical data, and follow budget and purchasing procedures.
- Human relation skills to facilitate group processes, convey instructions to small groups, and explain technical concepts to students with diverse backgrounds.
- Independently perform the duties of the position following well defined policies and procedures.
- Instruct and provide technical testing assistance to students of diverse backgrounds, abilities, skill levels, and learning styles.
- Analyze individual student skill levels and needs.
- Schedule, sequence, and implement work activity, independently and/or collaboratively with a variety of staff.
- Download data from one source and format to another, using step-by-step instructions.
- Recognize student needs and assist them with establishing individual educational goals.
- Administer, monitor, and score, standardized assessment, interest, and other tests.
- Maintain privacy of student information.
- Maintain complete and accurate files and records.
Education and Experience:
- Associate's degree in a related field.
- Two (2) years' experience in student services, instructional support, test proctoring and/or counseling.
- Or, any combination of education and experience that would provide the required qualifications.
Licenses and Certificates:
- May require a valid California driver's license.
- Office environment
- Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.
- Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to move to, stand and sit at a workstation for intermittent periods of time.
- Requires sufficient arm, hand, and finger dexterity in order to use a personal computer keyboard and other office equipment.
- Requires the intermittent ability to lift, pull, or push lightweight (up to 40 pounds) materials and equipment around classroom/laboratory environs and into and out of storage or filing areas.
- Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one-on-one and small group settings, and distinguish sound prompts from equipment.
- Requires visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens and to observe students perform tests in classroom, laboratory, and tutorial settings.
- Sitting for extended periods of time.
- Work extended hours may be required to meet the demands of the students and department.
- Conditions of Employment
This is a regular, part time, 19.5 hours per week, 12-months per year classified staff position. The normal hours of work will be arranged between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; some flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekend hours may be required to meet the needs of the department. The effective date of employment is to be arranged with the supervisor.

The Academic Senate is the governing body at each of our colleges for making recommendations to administration and to our Board of Trustees with respect to academic and professional matters. The Senate consists of elected faculty and has the responsibility for matters related to curriculum and general academic policy.
Time to Refuel
Classified, contract staff earn vacation days commensurate with years of service. Classified Management and Administrators earn 22 days vacation per year.
All contract employees earn sick leave as outlined in the CA Education Code. Sick leave may be carried over from year-to-year and, upon retirement, unused sick leave may contribute to your PERS and STRS retiree benefit.
The District observes 21 paid holidays per year.
Jury Duty, Bereavement, Military Leave
Coast grants contract employees called to jury duty a leave of absence, without loss of pay, for the entire length of required service. Other available leaves include bereavement from 3-5 days and military leaves of absence in accordance with applicable state laws.
The District participates in the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) and the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) for contract employees. Non-contract employees participate in Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan for the first 1,000 hours of their employment.
Additionally, it is the policy of the Coast Community College District that contract employees who retire from the District with ten or more years of service be afforded the same group insurance benefits until 70 years of age. A Medicare Supplement or GAP plan is available to retirees and their spouses after age 70.
The District maintains a program whereby qualified employees may request through Payroll to have a portion of his or her salary deposited under a tax sheltered annuity plan or an approved deferred compensation plan.
