Staff/Assistant Research Scientist, Weather Modification Program

The Division of Atmospheric Sciences of the Desert Research Institute (DRI), Reno has an immediate opening for a three-quarter-time (75% FTE) staff or assistant research scientist position in the Weather Modification Program (WMP). The position will support research and operations activities that occur within the program, which currently conducts cloud seeding operations and research projects within the states of Nevada, Colorado and Wyoming 24/7 during the months of November-April. If additional funding becomes available, this position may convert to a full-time staff/assistant research scientist. Supplementary funding opportunities may also be available.

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • maintaining databases of field data from weather stations, cloud seeding generators, and other facilities owned by the WMP
  • conducting seeding operations with DRI’s ground-based seeding generators and coordinating (internally or externally) any airborne-based cloud seeding operations
  • analyzing data from the generators, weather stations, numerical models and other data sources for incorporation into progress reports on seeding operations to various WMP sponsors
  • assisting the WMP Director in drafting reports, research papers, presentations and operational/research proposals to various stakeholders, sponsors, and professional societies

 

Candidates must possess a B.S. in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science or Geography (with a weather/climate emphasis); minimum of one year of experience post-Bachelors degree, in an operational forecasting or weather applications position; strong background in synoptic and mesoscale meteorological processes and forecasting, including the use of numerical models, radar products, satellite products and surface observations in obtaining a forecast.
