Job Summary/Purpose:

To provide instruction in Developmental Writing courses (WR 60: Rhetoric and Critical Thinking I and WR 65: Rhetoric and Critical Thinking II) at the Bend, Redmond, Madras and/or Prineville campuses in accordance with established COCC Humanities Dept. Writing program curricula and course-specific outcomes, as well as relevant College instructional policies applicable to all instructional faculty. Teaching performance will be evaluated by students and peers as specified by current COCC instructional administrative practices applicable to COCC part-time instructors.

• This is a part-time (< .50 FTE) non-benefited position, hired on a term-by-term basis. Hours of work may include evening or weekend teaching assignments.
• Part-Time Faculty compensation begins at Step 1 / $573 per load unit (LU). Load Unit is equivalent to class credit; and shall include both teaching and other assignments.
• Part-Time Faculty positions are not represented by the Faculty Forum Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• Initial assignment will be at the Bend Campus. May include travel throughout the College district.
• Official transcripts are required upon hire. Applicants anticipating Degree completion must supply a letter from his/her university stating the degree title and that the degree will be granted by that date.
• Upon hire, must pass criminal background check and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

Essential Functions:

1. Provide instruction in Provide instruction in Developmental writing courses (WR 60 and 65) in accordance with Humanities Dept. Writing Program curricula and course-specific learning outcomes, as well as relevant College instructional policies applicable to all instructional faculty.

2. Teaching assignments in instructional time-blocks (e.g. early morning and/or late afternoon) at the Madras and/or Prineville campus locations as required by Humanities Dept. Writing Program scheduling and staffing needs.

3. Work cooperatively with the Writing Program instructional team and accept direction from assigned Designated and Peer Evaluators, in developing and implementing syllabi, teaching methods, assignments, and grading standards to achieve program-wide student learning outcomes.

4. Be accessible and responsive to student, departmental and College communiqués, not only by addressing contacts face-to-face during class and office hours, but also by monitoring frequently and responding promptly to communications initiated via the faculty member’s departmental office mail box, COCC office telephone voicemail, COCC network electronic mail, and COCC Outlook conferences maintained by the department and its programs. Monitor and adhere to essential departmental and program information and curricular requirements relevant to part-time instructors’ teaching assignments communicated by other means (e.g. via orientation, voicemail, email, and individual meeting/s with the dept. chair and experienced program faculty peer/s).

5. Attend face-to-face general departmental and specific program meetings.

6. Perform other essential duties by required deadlines relevant to part-time instructor teaching assignments, as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Instructors must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the instructor can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities:

• Successful experience teaching writing at the high school or college level, or evidence of relevant preparation/experience promising success in teaching college-level writing; and such experience/preparation should demonstrate content knowledge and teaching applications current in the professional field of developmental Writing instruction.
• Willingness and ability to travel and teach instructional assignments at the Redmond, Madras and/or Prineville campuses, as required by Humanities Dept. Writing Program scheduling and staffing needs.
• Basic computer and other technological proficiencies, or aptitudes to acquire such proficiencies, as needed to deliver instruction in multimedia classrooms and to communicate effectively using College networked systems.
• Visual ability, corrected (e.g. with reliable prescription glasses) if required, to enable instructor to teach, observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom situations.
• Effective oral communication skills using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
• Effective written communication skills using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services.
• Willingness and ability to work with the Humanities Dept. Writing Program and other College entities as needed to deliver outcomes-based instruction consistent with program curricula, to supply requested data for program assessment, and to meet College requirements and deadlines applicable to all COCC faculty.
• Ability to work effectively and sensitively with constituents from diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Working hours vary according to number and credit/load unit value of assigned Writing course(s). Example, for each 4 credit developmental writing course, the instructor will be expected to provide 4 hours of in-class instruction (including instructional preparation time), and at least 1 office hour per week to confer with enrolled students, plus additional time as needed to accomplish assigned other “Essential Functions”. Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. Requires the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms. Requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in English, Rhetoric or related field.
2. Successful experience teaching developmental writing or evidence of instructional experience/preparation that promises success in teaching developmental writing at the community college level.
3. Willingness and ability to travel to teach at any college location in Central Oregon

Special Qualifications:

Preferred:
• Master’s Degree in English, Rhetoric or related field.
• College Level teaching experience
