The University:
California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is a preeminent center of intellectual and cultural activity in Inland Southern California. Set at the foothills of the beautiful San Bernardino Mountains, the university serves more than 20,000 students each year and graduates about 4,000 students annually. CSUSB reflects the dynamic diversity of the region and has the most diverse student population of any university in the Inland Empire, and it has the second highest African American and Hispanic enrollments of all public universities in California. Seventy percent of those who graduate are the first in their families to do so.

The Division:
CSUSB is made up of five administrative divisions. The Division of University Advancement promotes Cal State San Bernardino's educational mission through private philanthropic support, strategic communications, and alumni relations. University Development creates fundraising initiatives, events, and activities that stimulate the involvement and interest of alumni, friends, parents, corporations, and foundations by developing relationships that foster and stimulate giving to the university.

Position Description:
The Director of Annual Giving (DAG) leads the strategic planning, implementation, and continuation of multi-channel annual giving campaigns that increase contributions and participation from alumni/ae, parents, and other friends of the University. The DAG personally solicits Leadership Annual Giving prospects for contributions of $1,000 or more. Under the direct leadership of the Senior Director of Development, the DAG works with campus partners to design and execute a dynamic annual giving program informed by cutting-edge predictive data analytics and best practices of both the CSU community and the annual giving community-at-large.
This position requires a strong commitment to philanthropy, effective communication and writing skills, prospect research and organizational skills, and knowledge of annual giving best practices, trends, and technology. Proficiency in all related tax and legal considerations is required, as well.
 
Typical Activities

Annual Giving Campaigns & Programs:
The Director of Annual Giving will design and implement annual giving campaigns including direct mail, call center, email, text and other solicitation channels to meet established fundraising and participation metrics. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversight of the Annual Fund call center program, including creation and implementation of effective calling campaigns;
  • Design and execution of multi-channel direct mail and email campaigns;
  • Leadership and coordination of the annual faculty-staff giving program;
  • Creation of effective programs to engage and solicit current and former parents;
  • Coordination of annual giving level campaigns for athletics, the colleges, and other campus programs;
  • Strategic planning and implementation of campus-wide giving days, peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns, student philanthropy initiatives, and other programs to improve annual fund outcomes both in the percentage of alumni, parents, and friends participating and in the total dollars raised;
  • Supervision of Athletics Associate Director for Leadership Annual Giving,  Annual Fund Manager, classified staff, student assistants, and support staff, as necessary;
  • Budget development and oversight to ensure that annual giving programs are cost effective and adhere to fiscal requirements.
Leadership Annual Giving:
The Director of Annual Giving is responsible for personally securing gifts at the leadership annual giving ($1,000 - $9,999) level. Responsibilities include:
  • Providing active leadership in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors and prospects, including alumni, parents, past student leaders, friends of the university, emeriti faculty, and others;
  • Personally visiting with prospective donors and managing the University's relationship with assigned prospects and donors;
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships across campus, ensuring that fundraising activities are coordinated with other development staff members and university initiatives;
  • Working with staff from the division's advancement services office and prospect strategy staff to consistently ensure the freshness, correctness, and security of the advancement database including prospect, donor, and alumni records;
  • Collaborating with the Office of Strategic Communication to market priority programs to on-campus and off-campus constituents through publications and other communication methods, improving awareness, and expanding support;
  • Ensuring best practices in donor stewardship activities including appropriate individual and organizational donor recognition.
 
University Advancement Participation:
The Director of Annual Giving is part of an effective University Advancement team and shall:
  • Participate in divisional strategic planning, goal setting, event planning, and project status sessions;
  • Maintain the highest standards of development procedures and protocols utilizing various forms, report formats, databases, and clearance procedures;
  • Collaborate with the Office of Strategic Communication to ensure that all development-oriented pieces, communications, and events adhere to campus-wide and divisional graphics and professional communication standards;
  • Integrate development efforts with central advancement staff and the various services in place including working with the division's gift processing staff to ensure accurate gift recording and receipting;
  • File detailed contact reports with central advancement;
  • Assist with general donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship as part of a development team that attracts additional support that is important to all colleges, schools, and programs;
  • Represent programs, the division, and the university in the community by attending events, participating in local organizations, and serving on community based boards. 
Minimum Qualifications

Experience: 
This position requires a self-starter with experience in multi-channel fundraising. The incumbent will possess in-depth knowledge of current trends and best practices in annual giving, strong written and oral communication skills, well-developed computer skills, and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited university required, preferably in the fields of English (writing), business, marketing, or communication. A valid California driver's license and a private automobile with required insurance are required.
  • Three – five years of progressively responsible and successful fundraising experience at the annual giving level, including program planning and personal solicitation.
  • Excellent oral and written skills required in order to write fundraising appeals, reports and letters, and to communicate effectively with a variety of constituents, including high-profile leaders and donors.
  • Knowledge of the financial structure of donations including cash, gifts-in-kind, stocks and securities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, on and off campus, serving in a leadership role, and as a liaison and representative of the department, division, college, and the university is required. Must demonstrate accepted business and professional etiquette in all dealings with constituents and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability and success in donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals at the leadership annual giving level of support.
  • Ability to assess and interpret the needs and wishes of prospective donors, and to translate these into effective action plans.
  • Ability to gather data, analyze information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends when required due to donor meetings, events, and activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to reflect the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience increasing fundraising results in a multi-channel annual giving environment.
  • Experience with annual fund and development software including Campus Call, Datapump, Advance or Raiser's Edge, and Reeher.
  • Advanced degree preferred. Experience working in a higher education setting desired.
