Description of Position
This full-time, tenure track academic position is in the Counseling Department, within the Division of Student Services. The major responsibility is to coordinate counseling related activities within the HSI-STEM program (20%) and provide comprehensive counseling services to students interested in STEM and students majoring in the STEM fields (80%). Counseling services include all aspects of academic, transfer, career and personal counseling.
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
1. Assist STEM students with the decision-making process and the exploration of alternatives in regards to their educational, career and personal goals.
2. Develop comprehensive student educational plans tailored specifically to STEM majors.
3. Collaborate with the STEM office in the development of programs and activities for students.
4. Network and connect students with STEM organizations at the local, regional, state and national level.
5. Verify academic progress, advise prospective and current STEM students on university transfer and other related issues.
6. Provide class instruction in any assigned course according to currently established course outlines and procedures; to maintain necessary scholastic records and grades and to provide them according to published deadlines.
7. Adhere to the schedule developed with the Department Chairperson, which may include individual student appointments, drop-in assignments, workshops, and weekend and/or evening assignments.
8. Work with instructional faculty in support of the goals of the institution.
9. Participate in the college governance process, including attendance at all department and division meetings, and serving on college-wide committees.
10. Other counseling, coordination and teaching related duties as assigned.
11. Participate in the college community.
Duties and Responsibilities
In addition to contractual duties, all full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the teaching assignment may be in the evening and/or online. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. advancing equitable student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines;
2. participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs; developing and implementing student learning outcomes assessment processes for courses and programs;
3. collaborating in the development and revision of curriculum and in program review;
4. engaging in department program improvement initiatives;
5. participating in department, division, and college committees;
6. participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide;
7. maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/ learning strategies;
8. maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;
9. informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements;
10. preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress;
11. maintaining attendance, scholastic, and personnel records and submitting them according to published deadlines;
12. posting and holding sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy;
13. participating in College’s shared governance processes.
Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling,
OR a Bachelor’s degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Verifiable experience, knowledge, and ability in:
1. Demonstrated commitment to, and experience serving a multi-culturally rich and diverse student population. Demonstrated cultural competency excellence serving low socio-economic, first-generation, multi-lingual, foster youth, LGBTQ+, disabled, veteran, and immigrant students, and communities of color.
2. Demonstrated commitment to, and experience working with HSI-STEM population in successfully reaching their personal and academic goals.
3. Proven ability to lead and coordinate learning communities such as overseeing project budgets, develop program systems and infrastructure.
4. Proven ability to work effectively with faculty, administrators and staff in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning and service to a diverse student population.
5. Ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges, and universities to promote STEM student success.
6. Proven ability to utilize technology in the delivery of instruction and efficiently completing projects.
7. Knowledge of STEM programs, university transfer options and career opportunities.
8. Experience providing trauma intervention and mental health services.
9. At least one year of recent experience (full, or part time), post Master’s degree, working as a counselor in a California community college.
10. Demonstrated understanding of the comprehensive nature of general counseling which includes academic, career, and personal counseling as well as teaching.
11. Excellent presentation, facilitation, and instructional skills.
12. Experience teaching via various instructional modalities and developing curriculum, for college-level courses and/or workshops in areas such as college success, career planning/exploration, educational planning, and personal development
13. Knowledge of the California community college transfer process to public and private four year institutions both within and outside of California.
