Golden West College is currently seeking a full-time tenure track Counselor - General and CalWORKs commencing with the 2017 academic year. Under the supervision of the Dean of Counseling and Social Sciences, provide appropriate counseling and guidance services to the general student population and CalWORKs Program. The primary assignment involves providing a wide range of educational, career and personal counseling to current and prospective college students and instruction in student success, career planning and/or other personal growth courses. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.
The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online or off campus and is subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Golden West College and the Coast Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting teaching and academic excellence and student learning and success through the work of Counseling.
Examples of Duties: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Provide academic, career, and personal counseling related to a student's educational goals.
2. Assist students in making decisions relative to career choice and educational planning, including appropriate testing and vocational counseling.
3. Provide general orientation, program advisement, and follow-up counseling for new and continuing students.
4. Provide special counseling and guidance services as may be appropriate to special student audiences, including veterans, the disadvantaged, and members of underrepresented groups, academically marginal students, disabled persons, re-entry students, and other special populations.
5. Participate, as appropriate, in college outreach programs to local high schools and the community.
6. Develop effective working relationships with faculty members in instructional areas, and perform division liaison activities as required.
7. Assist with the development of counseling related publications, and in the presentation of workshops for special student audiences.
8. Conduct group counseling/advising as required.
9. Assist students seeking referral to appropriate community agencies or services in response to educational, career, and/or personal concerns.
10. Assist, where appropriate, in the articulation of courses and programs with four-year colleges and universities.
11. Participate in professional growth activities.
12. Assist in the development and implementation of special programs focusing on access and retention including special services for basic skills students.
13. Serve on division and college-wide committees and/or task forces.
14. Assist in carrying out the College Student Success and Support Services Plan.
15. Develop Student Educational Plans (SEP) for new and continuing students.
16. Teach counseling and guidance classes and provide workshops to staff and students as appropriate.
17. Administer and interpret a variety of assessment instruments (including, but not limited to, career assessments) to both groups and individuals.
18. Assist with specialized intervention with one or more of the following departments: Financial Aid, Veterans, Outreach, Career and Technical Education, or other groups as identified.
19. Assume other counseling and guidance responsibilities as assigned
1. Provide academic, career, assessments, and related personal counseling to qualified CalWORKs/TANF/GAIN students.
2. Assist CalWORKs students in making decisions relative to career choice and educational planning, including appropriate testing and vocational counseling in accordance with CalWORKs/TANF/GAIN county, state and federal policies and regulations.
3. Provide intakes and orientation, program advisement and follow up counseling for CalWORKs students.
4. Assist the CalWORKs Director with coordination of program policies and services.
5. Maintain knowledge of current laws and regulations, which include county, state and federal in order to ensure CalWORKs/TANF/GAIN program compliance. Apply knowledge base as a tool for educating students and advocating on their behalf with county and community based service providers.
6. Utilize a case management model of servicing CalWORKs students to maintain student counseling records and data designed to identify potential barriers to students' retention success.
7. Prepare forms or documents as requested by the Department of Social Services, Maximus and other agencies and submit in a timely manner.
8. Participate, as appropriate, in program outreach to social services agencies and the community for recruitment and collaboration to maintain supportive services for CalWORKs students.
9. Develop effective working relationships with faculty members in instructional areas and work closely with EOPS/CARE, DSPS, Financial Aid and Veterans to coordinate services with mutual student populations.
10. Assist with the development of CalWORKs related publications, and in the presentation of workshops for special student audiences.
11. Conduct group counseling/advising for CalWORKs students as required.
12. Assist students seeking referral to appropriate community agencies or services in response to educational, career, and/or personal concerns.
13. Assist, where appropriate, in the articulation of courses and programs with four-year colleges and universities.
14. Participate in professional growth activities.

19. Assume other counseling and guidance responsibilities as assigned.
1. Must meet one of the following qualifications under (a) through (d):
a. Possess the California Community College Teaching Credential for this subject area.
b. Possess a Master's degree from an accredited institution in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling.
c. Possess a Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT).
d. Or, possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. 2. Evidence of a sensitivity to, understanding of, and the ability to manage the classroom environment AND effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
• Evidence of an ability to contribute to campus and district-wide professional responsibilities and activities.
• Evidence of an ability to complement existing staff, student and community demographics in terms of professional and personal skills.
• Educational and/or instructional preparation in Counseling.
• Experience working with CalWORKs/TANF/GAIN students, or other special populations.
• Knowledge of career planning theories and processes.
• Knowledge of Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) guidelines with competencies in student educational planning and follow-up services.
• Counseling experience within a community college.
• Knowledge of community college curriculum, and intersegmental transfer policies.
• Experience working with local communities and businesses in partnership.
• Knowledge of crisis counseling and intervention strategies.
• Bilingual ability desired, but not required.
• Evidence of participation in student success initiatives in a post-secondary setting.
• Evidence of an ability to address the instructional needs of a diverse and frequently underprepared student population.
• Evidence of an ability to effectively engage with and facilitate authentic learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
• Evidence of an ability to adapt teaching pedagogy to the knowledge level (developmental through transfer) and personality of each individual and class.
• Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidenced-based assessment of student learning.
• Evidence of innovation, scholarship, or leadership in Counseling.
• Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District.
• Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
• Ability to work with computers, and use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students in on-campus and online courses (where academically appropriate); and intrinsic motivation and ability to develop and teach online courses.
• Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Conditions of Employment
Start Date: Fall Semester (August 2017)
For a full-time, two-semester position, a maximum starting range of $54,993 to $93,760 is offered, based on the 2016-2017 salary schedule of $54,993 to $122,772. In addition, an annual stipend of $2,878 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.
