DESCRIPTION:  Humboldt State University’s Department of Chemistry invites applications for an academic year tenure-track faculty position in Biochemistry. 
 
RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS:  We seek to fill this position at the Assistant Professor rank; however rank and salary are dependent on the appointee's qualifications and experience. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:  A Ph.D. in Biochemistry or closely related field from an accredited college or university is required at time of appointment. The focus of an individual's research specialization is open to all relevant areas of biochemistry. 
 
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
 
  • Ability to successfully teach undergraduate courses in Biochemistry;
  • Ability to successfully teach undergraduate courses in the General Chemistry sequence;
  • Appropriate successful teaching experience or evidence of promise as a teacher at the university level, or postdoctoral experience;
  • Potential for effective teaching or teaching experience using a variety of modern pedagogies;
  • Commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
  • Record of, or potential for, involving students in research and scholarly activity; and
  • Willingness to participate in the development of online learning experiences.
 
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
 
  • Record of or strong interest in cross-disciplinary research; and/or
  • Record of or strong interest in chemistry pedagogy/education research; and/or
  • Record of or potential to teach courses outside the applicant’s specialty area(s).

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES:  Candidates must be committed to teaching excellence and to building a robust research record with undergraduate students.  Dedication to superior and creative undergraduate instruction is a long-standing tradition at Humboldt State and in the Department of Chemistry. Instructional assignments may include: lectures, discussions and/or laboratory instruction in both lower and upper division Chemistry courses, as well as in General Education courses. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.  
 
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching; research and scholarship/ creative activity; and service to the University, profession, and the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.
 
GENERAL INFORMATION: The Department of Chemistry offers a BS in Chemistry, a BS in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry, and a BA in Chemistry. The instruction and facilities include: a modern computational chemistry laboratory available to majors and other analytical and applied instrumentation, including GC-MS, AA, FT-IR, HPLC and a modern multi-nuclear FT-NMR. The College of Natural Resources and Sciences also maintains a core facility of instrumentation for faculty and student use, including a TEM and FEI Quanta 250 ESEM with EDS and SpectraMax i3x Multi-Mode Detection plate reader.
