The University of Nevada, Reno, Department of Art announces a tenure-track assistant professor position in Graphic Design to begin in the fall semester of 2017. The successful candidate must be able to build foundation and upper division courses in Graphic Design.
Duties will include building a new graphic design program; developing curriculum(s); directing, organizing and supervising the graphic design program. Additional responsibilities include student advising and departmental service.
Tenure-track faculty will be expected to maintain a 2/3 teaching load with additional contributions to BFA and MFA programs in the Art Department and the School of Journalism.
The Department of Art at the University of Nevada, Reno, currently offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs covering a range of fine art disciplines including art history, book arts, ceramics, digital media, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and videography. The Department of Art provides a focused environment emphasizing critical perspectives and historical knowledge leading to an informed appreciation of the world's artistic heritage.
Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated record of working collaboratively across mediums. Model candidates must contribute to the department's culture of curricular innovation through progressive teaching practice and community engagement. Ideal candidates will have the facility to work with a diverse student body and an interest in mentoring undergraduate and graduate level students in the Art Department.

Candidates must have an MFA, MGD, MDes, DDes or PhD with a demonstrated record of professional accomplishments and a strong, active record in graphic design. Candidates must have one or more specialties that include interaction design, design thinking, social design, design theory, data visualization and user experience design. Candidates must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the history, contemporary practice, and theory of graphic design and their relationship with other media. Effective writing, communication and organizational abilities are essential. Candidates must be willing to work with a diverse student body and have an interest in mentoring undergraduate and graduate level students. Candidates must have significant expertise in digital technologies for design with a working knowledge of industry expectations and current trends. The candidate must also demonstrate knowledge of software pertinent to the field, including but not limited to Adobe Suite. Candidates must demonstrate effective writing, communication and organizational abilities. Candidates who use alternative software programs are encouraged to apply.
Preferred candidates will have at least one year of teaching experience in graphic design at the university level, beyond graduate school. Experience in student advising, program coordination, curriculum development, committee work and other service is also beneficial. Preferred candidates will include graphic designers whose research and professional practice is rooted in graphic design and demonstrate a capacity for working across disciplines.
