Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Assistant Vice Provost/Dean of Students, the incumbent will provide a high level of strategic planning and organization development, project management, performance management and training, communication, and analytical support in a variety of areas that support organizational effectiveness to deliver optimum student services, foster a thriving work environment, and advance diversity initiatives. 

The Assistant Dean of Students will provide oversight to the Dean of Students administrative operations, including management of the daily operations of the Dean of Students Office. The Assistant Dean will provide programmatic supervision for the Slug Support Program and the KZSC Radio Station. The Assistant Dean of Students will provide advising and mentoring services to the Student Volunteer Center, and serves as the financial steward for the organization. The Assistant Dean of Students will also provide advising and mentoring services to other student organizations and individual student projects on an adhoc basis. The Assistant Dean of Students serves as a partner to the Student Conduct and Community Standards Office as an appeal officer and manager of Respondent Services. 

This position requires the ability to work with insight, tact and diplomacy when interacting with constituents within Dean of Students, Student Success, UCSC and external communities. The incumbent works independently with a high degree of confidentiality, and is responsible for providing analytical and organizational support to the AVP/Dean of Students. The Assistant Dean of Students serves as operational back up to the AVP, Dean of Students when the AVP, Dean of Students is unavailable.  

Qualifications:

Master's degree in higher education administration, counseling, social work, or related field. 

Demonstrated experience working with college aged population as adviser, mentor and supervisor. 

Experience in strategic planning, organizational development, performance management, and/or assessment and research of a multi-faceted operation. 

Ability to analyze complex information, problems, and processes in an objective manner and formulate conclusions to provide a sound basis for establishing priorities, select appropriate courses of action and make recommendations. 

Demonstrated expertise in crisis management, crisis intervention and case management on college campuses. 

Excellent interpersonal, cultural competency and conflict resolution skills. Ability to effectively collaborate with people of diverse backgrounds. 

Excellent judgment and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive issues and information. 

Skill to understand, interpret and apply University and campus regulations, policies and procedures. 

Ability to make clear, informative and persuasive presentations to internal and external groups. 

Strong oral communication skills with ability to work effectively in group processes. Excellent writing skills to produce concise reports, policies and procedures, and correspondence.
