Students are paying more for college and getting less in the classroom, says a new Delta Project report. Trends in College Spending: Where Does the Money Come From? Where Does It Go? examines state-by-state financial trends in higher education institutions' operating budgets. Among the findings: The gap between rich and poor schools is growing. Spending is up in some institutions, but not where the majority of students enroll. The fastest growth is at institutions with the least resources and the greatest evidence of recent spending cuts-public community colleges.

In his recent joint address to Congress, President Barack Obama cited higher education as a key factor in rebuilding the U.S. economy. Specifically, Obama set a goal of having "the highest proportion of college graduates in the world," a statement that aligns with Lumina's "Big Goal" to increase the number of Americans with high quality two- and four-year degrees by 2025 from 39 percent to 60 percent.
