Promotions and Appointments

Leticia Duncan-Brosnan, MA
has been promoted to Executive Director of the Tomas Rivera Center for Student Success at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Grace Hernandez has been named chief of staff for Texas Tech University President Guy Bailey.

Dr. Cordelia Chavez Candelaria, dean of the Office of Strategic Affairs and Regents Professor, Department of English and Department of Transborder Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies, Arizona State University, has been named dean of Dedman College and University Distinguished Professor of English at Southern Methodist University in Texas, effective July 1.

Irene Chavez, former CEO of Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso, Texas, has been named special assistant for human resource development at the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP).

Dr. Elsa Murano, former vice chancellor and dean, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, was named the 23rd president of Texas A&M University.

New Mexico Sen. Dr. Pete Campos has been named president of Luna Community College.

FedEx Invests $352,500 in Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholarships and Outreach Programs

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF), the nation's leading Latino scholarship organization supporting Hispanic higher education, will receive $352,500 over the next three years from FedEx Corp. This funding from FedEx will provide scholarships for deserving students and support for four community education programs in local markets.

Program Description
HSF/ General College Scholarships are designed to assist students of Hispanic heritage obtain a college degree. Scholarships are available on a competitive basis to:
* Graduating High School Seniors
* Community College Students
* Community College Transfer Students
* Undergraduate Students
* Graduate Students

Award amounts generally range from $1,000 to $5,000

College Board Commission Asks That We Come to Our Senses And Quickly:

A December 2008 report of the College Board's Commission on Access, Admissions and Success in Higher Education ("Coming to Our Senses: Education and the American Future") states that for the United States to reclaim its education leadership position internationally, the nation "must establish and reach a goal of ensuring that by the year 2025 fully 55 percent of young Americans are completing their schooling with a community college degree or higher".

Excelencia in Education Now Accepting Nominations for 2009 Examples of Excelencia Awards:

Excelencia in Education will be accepting nominations through May 15 for the 2009 Examples of Excelencia awards. The Examples of Excelencia program recognizes educators, community-based organizations and institutions who/that have demonstrated a record of achievement in accelerating Latino student success in higher education. Programs or departments selected in 2009 will receive a $5,000 award, will be recognized at the Celebración de Excelencia and highlighted throughout the following year and will be added to the growing library of successful strategies for Latino students available from Excelencia online through the annual compendium.
