Promotions and Appointments

Dr. John Mondragon is the new chairman of the Governing Board at Central New Mexico Community College. Mondragon, a member of the Diversity Committee for the Association of Community College Trustees, has a bachelor's and master's degree from New Mexico Highlands University and a doctorate from the University of New Mexico.

The American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education selected Louie F. Rodriguez, assistant professor at California State University-San Bernardino's (CSUSB) College of Education, as a faculty fellow for 2011. Rodriguez attended San Bernardino Valley College and is an alumnus of CSUSB, where he was a McNair Scholar. He has two master's degrees and a doctorate in administration, planning and social policy from Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Experts from Georgetown and Lumina Foundation say that postsecondary education has become the new gateway to the middle class and one of the most important economic issues of our time.

Undersupply of College Grads

The nation must add 20 million postsecondary-educated workers to the economy by 2025 to increase productivity and reverse income inequality, according to a new report, the Undereducated American. Authors and labor economists Anthony Carnevale and Stephen Rose from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce warn that the nation runs the risk of becoming the global leader in income inequality unless more Americans earn degrees and credentials.

Needy Students ‘Priced Out’
By The Education Trust
Federal and local financial aid policies hinder many low-income students from receiving the money they need to attend and graduate from college, concludes a report from the Education Trust. Priced Out: How the Wrong Financial-Aid Policies Hurt Low-Income Students finds that only five of the nation’s four-year colleges and universities offer low-income students “a reasonable chance at a bachelor’s degree at a relatively affordable cost.”

Hispanics and Education
More young Hispanics are finishing high school, and the number attending two-year colleges has nearly doubled over the past decade, according to new U.S. Census data .  The percentage of Hispanics attending a two-year college has increased 85 percent, from 540,000 in 2000 to 1 million in 2008.
