The George Mason University (Va.) has selected Dr. Angel Cabrera to be the institution’s
next president. Cabrera is currently president of the Thunderbird School of Global Management, a
leading school of international business, a position he’s held since 2004. Prior to joining Thunderbird,
Cabrera was professor and dean at IE Business School in Madrid, Spain. IE is often listed by the international media as among the top European business schools. A native of Spain, he has a BS and MS in engineering from
Madrid Polytechnical University and an MS and Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology, which he attended as a Fulbright Scholar.
Karen DeSoto, an attorney, public advocate, television legal analyst and philanthropist, has been named to the New Jersey City University Board of Trustees. DeSoto is a solo practitioner who concentrates in the areas of employment law, civil rights, election law, municipal corporations and criminal defense. She has a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University’s Cook College, and a Master of Laws and a Juris Doctor from Temple University School of Law.

2013 AAHHE/ETS Outstanding Dissertations Competition
This competition is open to anyone who has completed a dissertation that focuses on Hispanic(s) in higher education or to any Hispanic individual who has completed a dissertation in the social sciences, broadly defined, between December 2010 and August 1, 2012. The top three winners will be invited and sponsored to attend the 8th Annual AAHHE National Conference (March 28-30, 2013) in San Antonio, Texas to present their dissertation and receive their award.
The first place winner will receive an award of $5,000, the second place winner will receive $2,000, and the third place winner will receive $1,000. Please share the attached dissertation guidelines with faculty, colleagues, recent doctoral graduates and current candidates who are eligible and encourage them to apply. Deadline to submit a dissertation abstract for the competition is August 24, 2012.

New Report Finds Modest Gains in America’s College Attainment Rates

Low-Income and Minority Students Being Left Behind at 2-Year Colleges

The budget-driven move by many community colleges to restrict enrollment and limit academic programs is denying more than 400,000 prospective students, especially low-income and minority students, the opportunity to obtain a college education, says a report released on Monday by the Center for the Future of Higher Education. The report, drawing on previously reported data, also says that community colleges are “narrowing their educational purpose” by focusing so heavily on preparing students for jobs and paying less attention to students who want to transfer to a four-year college.

Career Clusters: Forecasting Demand for High School Through College Jobs
Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce released, Career Clusters: Forecasting Demand for High School Through College Jobs, 2008-2018, a new report produced in collaboration with the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education and the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium. It analyzes and compares the educational requirements and pay across jobs for each of the 16 nationally-recognized career clusters. The report projects that the most promising financial future is for workers with bachelor's and master's degrees. If you have a four-year degree, five out of six jobs available pay more than $35,000 a year and average $60,000.
