The Price of Persistence: Barriers to Postsecondary Success for Low-Income and First-Generation Students

College Forward, in Austin, TX, is excited to release an important new study outlining the unique challenges economically disadvantaged students face once they enter the world of higher education. The report, entitled “The Price of Persistence: Barriers to Postsecondary Success for Low-Income and First-Generation Students,” shares insights on the particular barriers students from low-income backgrounds face and makes specific recommendations on how college access programs can provide more than entrance exam preparation and application assistance. The study was written by researchers at the University of Houston and funded by the TG’s Public Benefit Program.

National Latino Congreso Issues Call to Action

Building on the past three enormously successful gatherings of the National Latino Congreso, Latino leaders today announced that organizations, elected officials and community leaders from throughout the country will once again convene for the fourth National Latino Congreso, to be held at the historic Camino Real Hotel, January 29-31, 2010. The comprehensive gathering of thousands of organizations represents one of the largest gatherings of Latino leaders from throughout the country.

Demographic Profiles of U.S. Hispanics

The Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center, released five demographic profiles of Hispanic populations in the United States by country of origin: Guatemalan, Colombian, Honduran, Ecuadorian and Peruvian.
These five follow the release earlier this year of demographic profiles for the five largest Hispanic populations: Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Salvadoran, and Dominican.
The profile of the ten largest Hispanic populations in the U.S. describe the employment and income characteristics of each group. Characteristics of each group are also contrasted with the characteristics of all Hispanics and with the U.S. population overall. The profiles are based on the Center's tabulations of the Census Bureau's 2007 American Community Survey (ACS).
