Latino Males - Disapearing Act
Source: Diverse
One expert calls it “a silent crisis.” Latino males are more likely to drop out of high school and are more likely not to finish college. While the number of Latino males enrolled in colleges and universities has increased in the last 20 years, it has not kept pace with that of other ethnic groups. In addition, the gap between the number of male and female Hispanics on the nation’s campuses has widened. Although this last fact is true for all racial and ethnic groups, it is particularly acute among Hispanics.

Hispanic Achievement Gap Persists
Source: AAHHE
Hispanics participation in higher education continues to rise, yet their likelihood of graduating high school underprepared for college; their propensity to attend two-year schools; low levels of parent education; and limited financial resources pose formidable obstacles to achieving a baccalaureate degree, according to a new report released by Educational Testing Service and the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE).

NC Community Colleges to Enroll Undocumented Students
Source: Diverse
North Carolina's Community College system voted to admit undocumented immigrants at its campuses next year, a move unlikely to bring an immediate surge in undocumented students given a requirement that they pay higher tuition. The State Board of Community Colleges approved the rules, which according to proponents will provide clarity after four previous policy changes on the topic since 2001.

CLASE to Hold the First Trinnial Conference on Latino Education and Immigrant Intergration
Source: Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education
How, in a heavily politicized climate, can immigration-related effects on education be effectively addressed? What “best practices” will help to close the Latino student achievement gap, and how might these practices be disseminated in the face of often hostile, apathetic legislatures and/or school boards? What are the policy and research agendas of Latino-focused centers around the country, and how can these groups come together with decision makers? These and related questions will be a particular focus of attention at the First Triennial Conference on Latino Education and Immigration. Educators, foundation members, scholars, elected officials, and the community are invited to three days of substance, research, and policy orientation as these issues relate to Latino education, are discussed.
